Geek Chic This Week (6/3/12)

Geek Chic This Week is a feature here at Geek Chic to talk about the books I received this week, whether bought, borrowed, or fallen from the sky! It's inspired by the Story Siren's In My Mailbox.

Happy June, everyone! I hope you're enjoying the weather warming up! If it is where you are, I mean. It's certainly been warm here, surprisingly so :)

Anyway, on to the books!!

FROM THE LIBRARY

-Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. I'm not sure what kind of person/reader this makes me, but I've never read a Jane Austen book. Like, ever. But I've really been wanting to, and a friend of mine is also reading P&P for the first time, so I decided there's no time like the present!

-Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta. I've heard great things about this book, so why not?

-Tempest by Julie Cross. It's time travel! I love time travel! I already read it, and it was SO, SO GOOD!!!

-Ditched by Robin Mellom. Looks funny, and finally at my library!

-Cinder by Marissa Meyer. Another one finally at my library that I've been dying to read!!

-Taken By Storm by Jennifer Lynn Barnes. Oh my. This was so good. Yet it shattered my soul. (HOW COULD YOU DO THAT TO ME, JLB?????????) Urgh. I just...I just can't.

IN MY MAILBOX (KINDA)

-A Dog's Life by Ann M. Martin. Loaned to me by a friend. I don't know much about it, but it looks cool!!

-Denise by John Benton. Loaned by the same friend :)

-Grief Girl by Erin Vincent. Another loan from that friend. Looks really good!

BOUGHT

-City of Lost Souls by Cassandra Clare. COLS!!!! Read my excitement upon getting it HERE!

So what did you get in your mailbox this week? Leave me your book-sharing posts!!

CITY OF LOST SOULS!!!!

So, if you follow me on Twitter or Tumblr or anywhere else I've been talking about this, you know: I'm dying to read City of Lost Souls. By the time I realized my library had it in their system (a while before its release), when I put it on hold I was ninth in line. NINTH. This was not acceptable to me, but I decided to attempt to wait.

THIS DID NOT GO WELL.

Because here we are, 23-ish days since the release, and I STILL HAVEN'T READ IT. Still. And all I can see anywhere is how amazing it is, and I am dying.

So today I went to Target.

And there it was.

And I could not resist.

(Besides, it was the special Target edition, with a bonus story featuring Alec and Camille!!)
(That is the book in the Target, with my hand [left] and my brother's hand [right] because we are super excited)
(Another picture with cameo by my feet)

(And the side of it, because I was just like OMGosh CoLS I NEED MORE PICTURES BECAUSE ASDKLJFALK)
Anyway, the point of this post (yes, there is a point) is to say that I'm going to go read City of Lost Souls, so I won't be writing/posting a review today, because I simply can't wait. Since I'm trying to post 3 reviews a week, to make up for today's lack I'll be posting tomorrow, and hopefully Saturday.

So. That is all.

*Runs shrieking to cave to finally read*

Bookish things of AWESOME

Hey everyone! I'm skipping Waiting on Wednesday this week, but I would like to share several pieces of bookish awesomeness with you!!

FIRST OFF.

The City of Lost Souls book trailer has finally been released, and it is AMAZING. INCREDIBLE. UNBELIEVABLE. Check it out HERE!

I love the way that last line sounds. I know it isn't funny, but the way Sebastian says it makes me giggle every time. What do you think of the trailer?

NEXT.

Have you seen the excellent blog that is badlydrawnmortaldevices.tumblr.com? It's great! Basically, you can send a request to the blog's author, and she will draw a scene from Mortal Instruments or Infernal Devices (badly). SOME EXAMPLES:

And then, also some stuff that is not exactly canon :)

AWESOME SAUCE, AM I RIGHT?? Anyway, some of her stuff is spoilery, though, so be careful when checking out her site. But really. Check out her site. (all those images belong to Badly Drawn Mortal Devices!!)

Oh, and she also has another badlydrawn blog for Divergent!

badlydrawndivergenttrilogy.tumblr.com (that image belongs to badlydrawndivergenttrilogy!)

MORE AWESOME STUFF:

Another tumblr blog, except this one takes stills from the Hunger Games movie and adds quotes from Mean Girls. It is awesome.

Okay, I could share about a zillion more of those, but I'll stop now. The site, as is seen on all those pictures, is meangirlsofpanem.tumblr.com (those images belong to meangirlsofpanem)

LAST THING.

Have you guys seen any of ice-ridden's drawings? (ice-ridden.tumblr.com) She does AMAZING stuff, most of it fanart for some awesome books!!

Like this.

Fang by ice-ridden (Maximum Ride)
And this.

Demigod trio by ice-ridden (Annabeth, Luke, Thalia: from Percy Jackson)
But my absolute favorite stuff of hers is her Divergent drawings.

Ferris wheel by ice-ridden (Divergent)
Undress by ice-ridden (Divergent)
Again, I must make myself stop. But really, check out the rest of her stuff.

ice-ridden.tumblr.com
ice-ridden.deviantart.com

(those images belong to ice-ridden!)

So you may have noticed that lots of this is tumblr stuff. Yes, I do have a tumblr. It's just really lame. I only got one so I could follow people, but I did just learn how to reblog, and plan to use it to reblog bookish things that are awesome.

If you want to check it out, it's:

geekchicbooks.tumblr.com

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed seeing all of this bookish delight! Oh, and if you'd like to go ahead and leave me your WoW links, I'd still love to see them :)

Waiting on Wednesday: City of Lost Souls by Cassandra Clare

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted over at Breaking the Spine, spotlighting books that have not yet been released but are being greatly anticipated. Today, my pick under the category "EEEEEEEEEEEEK hey look a book that shall be AWESOME" is the FIFTH book in the INCREDIBLE Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare: City of Lost Souls

(Please remember that the synopsis contains spoilers for the other books in the Mortal Instruments series, so please beware if you haven't read them all!)

The demon Lilith has been destroyed and Jace has been freed from her captivity. But when the Shadowhunters arrive to rescue him, they find only blood and broken glass. Not only is the boy Clary loves missing–but so is the boy she hates, Sebastian, the son of her father Valentine: a son determined to succeed where their father failed, and bring the Shadowhunters to their knees.
No magic the Clave can summon can locate either boy, but Jace cannot stay away—not from Clary. When they meet again Clary discovers the horror Lilith’s dying magic has wrought—Jace is no longer the boy she loved. He and Sebastian are now bound to each other, and Jace has become what he most feared: a true servant of Valentine’s evil. The Clave is determined to destroy Sebastian, but there is no way to harm one boy without destroying the other. Will the Shadowhunters hesitate to kill one of their own?
Only a small band of Clary and Jace’s friends and family believe that Jace can still be saved — and that the fate of the Shadowhunters’ future may hinge on that salvation. They must defy the Clave and strike out on their own. Alec, Magnus, Simon and Isabelle must work together to save Jace: bargaining with the sinister Faerie Queen, contemplating deals with demons, and turning at last to the Iron Sisters, the reclusive and merciless weapons makers for the Shadowhunters, who tell them that no weapon on this earth can sever the bond between Sebastian and Jace. Their only chance of cutting Jace free is to challenge Heaven and Hell — a risk that could claim any, or all, of their lives.
And they must do it without Clary. For Clary has gone into the heart of darkness, to play a dangerous game utterly alone. The price of losing the game is not just her own life, but Jace’s soul. She’s willing to do anything for Jace, but can she even still trust him? Or is he truly lost? What price is too high to pay, even for love?
Darkness threatens to claim the Shadowhunters in the harrowing fifth book of the Mortal Instruments series.
I AM SO EXCITED. How could I not be?? TMI is one of my favorite series of all time, and I can't WAIT to see what happens next, not just for Jace and Clary, but also for Alec, Magnus, Isabelle, Simon, Maia, Jordan, Luke, Jocelyn...the list goes on and on.

Seriously, people, this will be EPIC. If you haven't read the first four books yet you MUST DO THIS NOW. Seriously, go. You have NO CLUE what you're missing!

Oh, and don't forget that you can read the prologue of CoLS HERE!

EEEP. So exciting!

What are you waiting on this week? Leave your WoW links in the comments!

Beautiful Covers

So, with the new year, there are a lot of new books coming out. And many of these books have absolutely fantastic covers. But there are three that are really sticking out to me right now. So, in descending order (from least favorite to most favorite) are those three gorgeous covers.

3. Timepiece by Myra McEntire

I really love this. It's totally complementary to Hourglass's cover, yet lovely and striking on its own. I don't even have words to say what I'm feeling about it. I mean, seriously, just look at it.

2. City of Lost Souls by Cassandra Clare

How gorgeous is this?? First off, FINALLY we've got Jace and Clary on the cover together! Secondly, I love this guy portraying Jace. Not only is he really good looking, somehow he just IS Jace. If I concretely pictured Jace (something I usually don't do with book characters) this is what he'd look like. And am I the only one thinking that this girl portraying Clary looks, like, EXACTLY like Amy Adams? Is that just me? Anyway.

1. Before I Wake by Rachel Vincent

This. Cover. Rocks. It's so pretty! And flow-y. And...I don't even know. And I kind of like that Kaylee's alone on this one. As in: I'm really glad that Nash finally got kicked off the covers. 'Cuz I kinda-semi hate him. Though, admittedly, I wouldn't mind seeing a certain blond reaper on the cover with Kaylee. Just sayin'...;)

Anyway, those are my favorite covers right now. And, honestly, I CAN'T WAIT to read the books, too!
