The Maximum Ride Reading Challenge Starts Tomorrow!

Hey you guys! Do you remember a couple weeks ago when I started talking about the Maximum Ride Reading Challenge that Ella from Musings in Ink and I decided to put together?

Well, tomorrow is the first day of March, and it's also the first day of the Challenge! The Challenge itself is really quite simple: We'd just like to get a bunch of people together to read and talk about the Maximum Ride books by James Patterson.

All of the details for the Challenge can be found at its official blog, specifically on the Details Page. It explains all about what the books are about, and a little bit about the other fun things Ella and I have planned for the duration of the Challenge, like quizzes, polls, debates and trivia.

Then, you can sign up for the Challenge over at the Sign Up Page, That's as easy as entering your name, email address, and profile of any sort (your blog, Facebook, Goodreads, Twitter, whatever!) into the Linky form there. That's it! You're officially signed up for the Challenge.

After that, if you'd like, you can pop over to the Grab A Button Page and, well, grab a button to display on your blog or other forum. Because the more people participating in this Challenge, the more fun for all involved!

The official schedule for the Challenge suggests reading two books a month for the first two months (That means reading The Angel Experiment/School's Out Forever in March, and Saving the World and Other Extreme Sports/The Final Warning in April) and then one book a month until August, when Nevermore, the final Maximum Ride Adventure, is released.

The most important thing to remember about this Challenge is that it doesn't matter if you've read the books or not, you're more than welcome to join the Challenge. Besides that, you're in no way obligated to read all the books, review the books, or even follow the schedule. The choice is entirely your own. The only thing Ella and I ask is that you avoid revealing spoilers to anyone who hasn't read whatever book you're talking about. The discussion posts will all be marked, so that it's clear up to what point in the series spoilers are allowed. (For example, in a discussion about The Final Warning, spoilers from the first four books will be fair game; therefore anyone who HASN'T read the first four books should avoid it, and anyone who's read, say, six of the books should avoid spoiling anything from books five or six.)

This post has gotten rather long, so I'll go ahead and sign off. Just remember, you can find out all kinds of information at maxridereadingchallenge.blogspot.com. If you have any questions about the Challenge, feel free to leave a comment somewhere on that blog, or to contact me or Ella. (My email is mag.geekchic[at]yahoo[dot]com)

And one more thing: We're trying to get as many people involved in the Challenge as possible, so, even if you're not interested in participating yourself, please help us out and spread the word! Thanks so much!

Waiting On Wednesday: Before I Wake by Rachel Vincent

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted over at Breaking the Spine, spotlighting books that have not yet been released but are being greatly anticipated. Today, my pick under the category "Oh my gosh have you seen this because it is going to be utterly incredible" is none other than the sixth book in the AMAZING Soul Screamers series by the fantastic Rachel Vincent: Before I Wake.

But before I continue:

*WARNING WARNING WARNING WARNING!*

If you haven't read the fifth Soul Screamers book, If I Die, this synopsis is so ridiculously spoilery it isn't even funny. So proceed with caution, please!

I died on a Thursday—killed by a monster intent on stealing my soul.
The good news? He didn’t get it. The bad news? Turns out not even death will get you out of high school…
Covering up her own murder was one thing, but faking life is much harder than Kaylee Cavanaugh expected. After weeks spent “recovering,” she’s back in school, fighting to stay visible to the human world, struggling to fit in with her friends and planning time alone with her new reaper boyfriend.
But to earn her keep in the human world, Kaylee must reclaim stolen souls, and when her first assignment brings her face-to-face with an old foe, she knows the game has changed. Her immortal status won’t keep her safe. And this time Kaylee isn’t just gambling with her own life…
Do I even need to explain why I'm excited for this book? I'm just so glad the synopsis is finally released so that we have an idea of what's to come for Kaylee. AND TOD! Oh, Tod. Seriously, he's one of the best Book Boyfriends EVER. (:D)

Oh, and for added fun, you can see an awesome post from Rachel Vincent herself talking about the synopsis, and a little of what we can expect in BIW.

Did you read it? Did you? How bout that last little bombshell Rachel dropped?

*Insert Freakout Here*

Oh, and Kaylee and Tod also happen to be my OTP forever :)

Review: Shadows by Jennifer L Armentrout

PEOPLE PEOPLE PEOPLE. Have you read the wonderousness that is Obsidian by Jennifer L Armentrout? I really hope you have, because it is JUST THAT GOOD. If you haven't, you absolutely must go find yourself a copy. And as soon as you're done, grab Shadows and read that, too, because it is absolutely fantastic.

*A quick warning before you read the rest of this review*
It's going to be a major gush-fest. Because I love this series so much.

Shadows by Jennifer L Armentrout
The last thing Dawson Black expected was Bethany Williams. As a Luxen, an alien life form on Earth, human girls are…well, fun. But since the Luxen have to keep their true identities a secret, falling for one would be insane. Dangerous. Tempting. Undeniable.
Bethany can’t deny the immediate connection between her and Dawson. And even though boys aren’t a complication she wants, she can’t stay away from him. Still, whenever they lock eyes, she’s drawn in. Captivated. Lured. Loved.
Dawson is keeping a secret that will change her existence…and put her life in jeopardy. But even he can’t stop risking everything for one human girl. Or from a fate that is as unavoidable as love itself.
------
Okay, so I absolutely LOVE Obsidian. I'm not sure if I've ever mentioned it here on the blog, but I do. So, as soon as Shadows came out, I knew I NEEDED to get it. Man, it's amazing, too! And Dawson? Easily as hot (obviously, they're identical) and awesome as Daemon. And Daemon is pretty dang awesome.

Actually, it was really awesome to see a different side of Daemon (and Dee!) in this book. I can't decide if this is a spoiler or not (probably not if you've read Obsidian), so if you're being careful, I'd avoid the next couple of paragraphs or so.

***Possible Spoilers***

Anyone who's read Obsidian knows how Shadows is doomed to end, but that doesn't mean it's any easier to see. What happens at the end of Shadows takes its toll on Daemon and Dee. In Shadows, while Daemon is still overprotective of his siblings and (in Katy's words) rather stab-worthy, he's less so. The events at the end of Shadows change that, I think. Like the last couple paragraphs. They made me want to cry. And I never cry during books.

One of the very last lines was incredibly sad, but it really helped me understand Daemon in Obsidian better:
He held his sister tighter--the last of his family--and swore never again. Never again would he let a human put his family in harm's way. Never again.
See what I mean?

***Possible Spoilers Over***

But really, altogether, this book was fantastic, and really helped bridge the gap between reading Obsidian and Onyx. (which I can't wait for!)

Something I liked was how Dawson was so much more OPEN than Daemon. I can understand why Daemon's reserved and more cautious, but I still liked seeing Dawson, who's so like Daemon yet so different, you know? And, of course, as always with the Black brothers, the romance was awesome (;D).

There were also plenty of LOL moments, just like in Obsidian:
Vaughn's face flushed. "You have a smart mouth, Daemon."
"Better than a dumb one." Dawson said. "At least, that's what I like to say."
And of course, this one:
Then Ash twisted toward Daemon, her cheeks flushed. "I can't believe you're allowing him to do this. Next thing we know, you'll be dating a human."
Daemon busted out laughing. "Yeah, not going to happen."
Oh, Daemon. You have no idea.

Altogether and without a doubt, Shadows gets <*><*><*><*><*>

Review: Where She Went by Gayle Forman

After I read If I Stay, I read the synopsis of Where She Went and was instantly horrified. Freaking out, I read the entire thing in one day, because I needed to know that everything would turn out okay.

Where She Went by Gayle Forman
It's been three years since the devastating accident . . . three years since Mia walked out of Adam's life forever.
Now living on opposite coasts, Mia is Juilliard's rising star and Adam is LA tabloid fodder, thanks to his new rock star status and celebrity girlfriend. When Adam gets stuck in New York by himself, chance brings the couple together again, for one last night. As they explore the city that has become Mia's home, Adam and Mia revisit the past and open their hearts to the future - and each other.
Told from Adam's point of view in the spare, lyrical prose that defined If I StayWhere She Went explores the devastation of grief, the promise of new hope, and the flame of rekindled romance.
------
Two words can sum up Adam Wilde since the tragedy three years ago: Screwed Up. Ever since Mia recovered from the crash and walked out of his life, he's been empty, despite his growing fame, his rock-star life and his beautiful movie star girlfriend.

I was really excited when I found out that Where She Went would be from Adam's point of view. What I wasn't expecting was for this book to be so SAD. Adam was crushed by the choice Mia made, the one I was not expecting her to make. The choice only Adam knows he gave her.

Just like in If I Stay, music was a big part of Where She Went. Of course, that's to be expected, as Adam is a famous rocker and Mia is a cello star. I really loved the lyrics from Adam's songs opening some of the chapters. I'd love to actually hear them, I bet they sound heartbreaking.

This book kept me reading and reading, desperate to find out if everything would work out for Mia and Adam.

Does it?

I guess you'll have to find that out yourself.

This book gets <*><*><*><*>

Tagged (Again!)

Hey guys! So, if you recall, a couple days ago I tagged the delightful Ella from Musings in Ink to answer some questions. And she tagged me back, so here I am again to answer her questions!

THE RULES
-You must post the rules.
-Answer the questions the tagger set for you in their post and then create eleven new questions to ask the people you’ve tagged.
-Tag eleven people and link to them on your post.
-Let them know you’ve tagged them!

1. If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?

Ooh, that's a good one. I'm going to have to go with telekinesis, because that would just be awesome.

2. You are walking in a forest and you come across two different paths. As the poem by Robert Frost goes, the first path is one that appears to be worn and familiar. The other path appears new and unused. Which path do you take?

Honestly, the one less traveled by ;)

3. What is your opinion on love triangles?

Ooh. This is a tough subject for me, because there are plenty of books out there that I love that have love triangles. But I'm getting sick of them, especially love triangles for the sake of love triangles. These days, a good, solid, single-love-interest book like The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer or Legend is a breath of fresh air.

4. What is your opinion on vampires, faeries, and werewolves being used in YA fiction?

Another toughie. Vamps: I loved the Twilight books when they first came out, but lately the hype (and certain actors in the movies [not naming names, but seriously]) have made them lose their appeal for me. Not that I'm saying that all vamp books are Twilight ripoffs, but I'm just getting bored of them. That said, I've been thinking of giving them one last shot, so tell me, which is better, the Bloodlines series or the Vampire Academy series?

Faeries: Another commonly-used genre these days, but one I don't mind as much.

Werewolves: Werewolves are actually in a good place for me right now. I like them, and all other kinds of weres and shifters.

5. What are some amazing books you have read this year (so far)?

Ooh, gosh. *Clicks over to my read-this-year list* Tempus by Tyra Lynn (though that was a reread), Fateful by Claudia Gray, Need by Carrie Jones, Clarity by Kim Harrington, the Reckoning by Kelley Armstrong (another reread), Dash & Lily's Book of Dares by Rachel Cohn & David Levithan, and Shadows by Jennifer L. Armentrout. To name a few.

6. Which is more important in a novel: the plot or the characters?

OOOH, that's a good question, because they're both important. I want to say the characters, because if I don't like the characters or if they're not fully developed, I don't want to keep reading. But the same goes if the plot isn't good, either!

7. If you went to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, which of the four houses do you think you would be sorted into?

RAVENCLAW WITHOUT A DOUBT. I hope. But think about it, sitting around all day studying, learning, reading, and being a complete know-it-all? That's so me.

8. What is one book and one movie you are looking forward to reading/seeing in 2012?

Insurgent by Veronica Roth and The Hunger Games movie.

9. One book you would most definitely read again, and one book you would never read again?

Book I would read again: Amy and Roger's Epic Detour by Morgan Matson

Book I wouldn't read again: The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks by E. Lockhart

10. What is your favorite comfort food?

Easy: Chocolate :)

11. If you'd been on the Titanic, would you have been: a) one of the first people to jump into the ocean, b) a person who waited and ended up in a small lifeboat, or c) someone who sunk nobly along with the ship?

I'd like to say I would be the noble one, but I'm not sure how likely that is. But I wouldn't jump into the ocean, so probably (b).

Now, since I've already done the tagging thing once, I'm going to skip it this time. But I'll go ahead and add some questions, so feel free to answer them if you'd like! I'd love to see your answers :)

1. What's your favorite song right now?

2. What would you say is your LEAST favorite book?

3. What is the thing that most often makes you decide to read a book? Cover? Synopsis? Someone's review/suggestion? Something else?

4. What's your favorite book-to-movie adaption?

5. Do you have a favorite time/place to read?

6. QUICK NAME THE FIRST THREE BOOKS THAT POP INTO YOUR HEAD!

7. QUICK NAME THE FIRST THREE AUTHORS THAT POP INTO YOUR HEAD!

8. Where do you find out about the most books you read?

9. Who is your favorite book Main Character?

10. Favorite book Villain?

11. Favorite book couple?

You can answer the questions in a blog post if you'd like (please leave me the link so I can see your answers!) or just answer them in a comment :)

(Check out my first tagging post HERE)

Novels 'n' Notes #6: Like We Used To by A Rocket to the Moon

Novels ‘n’ Notes is a weekly event I created here at Geek Chic to talk about songs that remind me of books. Feel free to make your own NN post! Just grab the logo (below) and don't forget to leave the link to your post here so I can check it out!

Like We Used To by A Rocket to the Moon: Logan Keeley and Aura Salvatore from the Shade series by Jeri Smith-Ready
I absolutely love the Shade series. It's definitely one of my favorites. And even though I'm thoroughly Team Zachary, when I was listening to this song the other day, it suddenly hit me that this it's so totally an Aura-Logan song.

I'll list a few of the key lyrics like I usually do, but you've really got to listen to the whole thing, because the whole thing is perfect.

-"It should've been me inside that car...It should've been me instead of him in the dark."

Logan would give anything to be alive again, and to have another shot with Aura. But now Zachary's in the picture.

-"You're on my mind, love. (Oh, darling, I know that I'm not needed) And that happens all the time, love."

Aura is pretty much the only reason Logan's sticking around. But she's beginning to move on from him, because of Zach.

-"Will he love you like I loved you? Will he tell you every day? Will he make you feel like you're invincible with every word he'll say? Can you promise me if this was right, don't throw it all away. Can you do all these things? Will you do all these things like we used to?"

*Sniff, sniff*

But seriously, you must listen to this:

Please note that I do not own this song, the lyrics, or anything related to A Rocket to the Moon or Like We Used To. I also did not post this video, nor am I affiliated with "spongebob4713", who did. *Insert other legal stuff here.*

So, what do you think? Like We Used To make you think of Aura, Zach, Logan and Shade? What other songs make you think of books?

You can tell me in the comments or your own NN post!

Review: If I Stay by Gayle Forman

I've got to tell you guys, I was kind of terrified to read this book, because I knew it was going to be sad. If you've known me a while, you know I tend to avoid sad books. I'm a worrier by nature, so it doesn't do me any good to read books about people who have terminal diseases or get kidnapped or something. But I'd heard so many good things about this book, I had to give it a shot.

If I Stay by Gayle Forman
In the blink of an eye everything changes. Seventeen-year-old Mia has no memory of the accident; she can only recall what happened afterwards, watching her own damaged body being taken from the wreck. Little by little she struggles to put together the pieces - to figure out what she has lost, what she has left, and the very difficult choice she must make. Heart-wrenchingly beautiful, Mia's story will stay with you for a long, long time.
------
One second Mia's hanging out with her family, looking forward to dinner with her grandparents and spending time with her boyfriend. The next she's hanging between life and death.

She can see her body from the outside as it's taken from the wreckage of the horrible crash to the hospital, where doctors and nurses fight to keep her alive. She can see her grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins in the waiting room, tensely waiting for any news. And slowly, bit by bit, she begins to realize that the choice of whether she'll live or die rests solely in her hands.

I can't even begin to imagine how horrible a choice that would be. How can you stay without some people, or go without others? How can you decide which is more important? That's the root of Mia's problem.

But beyond that choice, there were two major parts of If I Stay that I absolutely adored: Adam and Kim. Those two were incredible. Their loyalty and devotion to Mia was beautiful, especially Adam's. I absolutely loved Adam. I would have loved him even if the whole book had taken place in the days surrounding the accident. As it was, the flashbacks only made me love him infinitely more.

The flashbacks were, in a word, interesting. I've heard some people talk about flashbacks in general being annoying in books, but I've never minded them, especially when they tie so flawlessly into what's going on in the present of the book, which was certainly the case in If I Stay.

This book made me happy, sad, and scared. It made me hold my breath and hope that everything would work out in the end for Mia  and the people who love her. And it made me desperately want to read Where She Went, which is (luckily) next on my TBR list.

Altogether, this book gets <*><*><*><*>

Waiting on Wednesday: Timepiece by Myra McEntire

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted over at Breaking the Spine, spotlighting books that have not yet been released but are being greatly anticipated. Today, my pick under the category "Holy. Cow. Be. Out. Now." is the second book in the Hourglass series by Myra McEntire, Timepiece.

A threat from the past could destroy the future. And the clock is ticking...
Kaleb Ballard's relentless flirting is interrupted when Jack Landers, the man who tried to murder his father, timeslips in and attacks before disappearing just as quickly. But Kaleb has never before been able to see time travelers, unlike many of his friends associated with the mysterious Hourglass organization. Are Kaleb's powers expanding, or is something very wrong?
Then the Hourglass is issued an ultimatum. Either they find Jack and the research he's stolen on the time gene, or time will be altered with devestating results.
Now Kaleb, Emerson, Michael, and the other Hourglass recruits have no choice but to use their unusual powers to find Jack. But where do they even start? And when? And even if they succeed, it may not be enough...
The follow-up to Hourglass, Timepiece blends the paranormal, science fiction, mystery, and suspense genres into a nonstop thrill ride where every second counts.
OOH OOH OOH! Have you read Hourglass? You have to read Hourglass. I love that book so dang much, and I absolutely can't wait to see more of Michael, Emerson and Hourglass in Timepiece. AND HAVE YOU SEEN THAT COVER? It's so awesome!

What are you waiting for this week?

Review: Dash & Lily's Book of Dares by Rachel Cohn & David Levithan

I was a little nervous when I started reading this book. I was drawn to this book both on Goodreads and at the library, but I decided to go ahead and read Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist first. And while that one was okay, it wasn't GREAT. But I gave it a shot anyway, and I'm glad that I did because where Nick & Norah was okay, Dash & Lily was AMAZING.

Dash & Lily's Book of Dares by Rachel Cohn & David Levithan
I've left some clues for you. If you want them, turn the page. If you don't, put the book back on the shelf, please.
So begins the latest whirlwind romance from the bestselling authors of Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist. Lily has left a red notebook full of challenges on a favorite bookstore shelf, waiting for just the right guy to come along and accept its dares. But is Dash that right guy? Or are Dash and Lily only destined to trade dares, dreams, and desires in the notebook they pass back and forth at locations across New York? Could their in-person selves possibly connect as well as their notebook versions? Or will they be a cosmic mismatch of disastrous proportions?
Rachel Cohn and David Levithan have written a love story that will have readers perusing bookstore shelves, looking and longing for a love (and a red notebook) of their own.
------
OH. MY. GOSH. This book was SO GOOD, I don't even know where to begin. Well...I guess with the beginning. Not five pages in and already I was laughing out loud (and receiving very strange looks) and completely, absolutely, HEAD OVER HEELS in love with Dash. He's amazing. Smart, cute, funny, and most of all BOOKISH. He's my newest book crush, and I get the feeling he'll be on the list for a long time.

And then there's Lily. I loved her, too. Besides their mutual love of books, she and Dash (or as she calls him, Snarl) are kind of polar opposites. She's an optimist and an idealist, while Dash is a pessimistic cynic. Together, though, they just work.

Really, there was so much to love in this book. To name a few:

-I loved Lily's attitude and narration. She was just so fun and happy, yet she had problems and sadness too. And she's just so dang cute.

-I loved...well, everything about Dash. Seriously.

***This next bit is not exactly a spoiler, but something that would be more fun to discover on your own! Beware!***

I changed the text color to make it harder to see. Highlighting it should make it easier to read.

-I loved the part with the writing on the bathroom wall, where Lily sees the message Norah left in Nick & Norah.

***Spoiler over***

-I loved Lily's crazy family.

-I loved Chapter 17, which is without a doubt the most fantastic chapter I've read in a very long time. There's no words to describe it adequately. Anyone who's read Dash & Lily knows what I mean.

-And finally, I loved this quote:

"You don't know who Nicholas Sparks is?" he asked.
     I shook my head.
"Please don't ever find out," he said.
     -Page 250

Altogether, this book gets, without a doubt, <*><*><*><*><*>

Review: Someone Else's Fairytale by E. M. Tippetts

I like to think of myself as a person who wouldn't turn into a squealing fangirl if ever I had the opportunity to meet a celebrity. So the storyline of Someone Else's Fairytale intrigued me from the start.

Someone Else's Fairytale by E.M. Tippetts
JASON VANDERHOLT is Hollywood's hottest actor.
CHLOE WINTERS is a college student who hasn't bothered to see most of his movies.
When they meet by chance, he is smitten and Chloe becomes the woman every other woman in America is dying to be, but it just isn't her fairytale.
------
Chloe Winters is NORMAL, and she likes it that way. All she wants to do is finish college, become a forensic scientist, and forget about the horrible event in her past that changed her life forever.

AND THEN. (Of course there's an "and then")

It starts when Chloe's housemate Lori convinces her to come be an extra on the set of the new Jason Vanderholt movie. Chloe is the farthest thing from a fan of his, but she goes anyway. That's when Jason himself sees her, and everything turns upside down.

One of my absolute favorite parts of this book was that I could totally relate to Chloe. I'm a simple type of girl. Hand-and-foot service and celebrity status could easily make me uncomfortable. I liked that Chloe wasn't a screaming fangirl, because there ARE real girls who don't act like that.

And then there's Jason. Oh, MAN, I loved Jason. I know that Chloe is a realistic character. I don't know about Jason, (I actually don't know any movie stars) but I know I wouldn't have liked him if he acted like a "typical" movie star jerk. But Jason was sweet and nice and normal...well, as normal as a movie star can be.

But this book is about more than just the romance between the "normal" and "famous" girl and guy. Chloe's dealing with a rough life and problems she won't let other people (other people being Jason) help her with. So the story is also about Chloe opening up to other people's aid and understanding that she doesn't have to do everything herself.

Altogether, this was great book I really recommend, especially for people who love that movie The Prince and Me (I do, I totally do!) or just love a good Fairytale with a twist.

I give this book <*><*><*><*>
