Novels 'n' Notes #2: Numb by Linkin Park

Novels 'n' Notes is a weekly event I created here at Geek Chic to talk about songs that remind me of books.

Numb by Linkin Park: Tris from Divergent by Veronica Roth

This song, to me, sounds like something Tris would say to her parents. I mean, listen to these lyrics:

-"I'm tired of being what you want me to be. Feeling so faithless, lost under the surface. Don't know what you're expecting of me. Put under the pressure of walking in your shoes..."

Even as early as the beginning of Divergent, Tris is feeling like she's always disappointing her parents and even Caleb, struggling to be as selfless and good as them. It's starting to hurt her, which is why she chooses Dauntless over Abnegation.

-"I'm becoming this; all I want to do is be more like me and be less like you."

Becoming this: Becoming Dauntless

More like me: Divergent

Less like you: Abnegation

-"And I know, I may end up failing too. But I know you were just like me with someone disappointed in you."

*Sorta spoilery*

Tris understands that her Divergence may get her killed. But by the end of the book, she also knows that her mother ***spoiler spoiler spoiler*** was Divergent, too.

Anyway, you can listen to Numb below. While you listen, just kind of think about Tris and Divergent, and see if you get what I mean.
