Author Are Rockstars Tour: Kim Harrington

I'm so UNBELIEVABLY excited to be a part of the Authors Are Rockstars tour being put on by the ultra-awesome Fiktshun and Two Chicks on Books!! And I'm even more excited to be hosting the fabulous, fantastic, super talented Kim Harrington!!

As a huge fan of both music and books, I'll be the first to agree that authors most certainly are Rockstars! And as a huge fan of books featuring mystery, romance, humor, and kick-butt protagonists, it's no surprise that Kim Harrington is one of my favorites! Her books Clarity and Perception are some of my top mystery picks for ANYONE!

Clarity's heroine, Clare Fern, is a normal teenage girl...except, you know, she's psychic. In Clarity, she uses her extra sense to try and help the police solve a murder, bringing danger, murderers, and potential love to her doorstep.

I haven't read Kim's series for kids, Sleuth or Dare, but they look absolutely fantastic, as does her upcoming YA title, The Dead and Buried! I can't wait to read it!

For a book to really hold my attention and gain my absolute adoration, the author has to be really awesome at mixing action-packed adventures that make my heart race, mysteries and questions that make me think, humor that keeps me giggling, and yes, a good-sized dose of romance--and Kim, I feel, has found the perfect balance!

About Kim: 

Kim Harrington is the author of the Clarity series for teens and the Sleuth or Dare series for kids. She lives in Massachusetts with her husband and son. When not writing, she's most likely reading, watching one of her favorite TV shows, or fantasizing about her next vacation. Her first book, Clarity, received a starred review from Publisher's Weekly, was a 2012 ALA Quick Pick for Reluctant Readers, sold to nine countries, and was optioned for television by Warner Brothers.

Q. What was your inspiration for becoming an author? Have you always wanted to write or is it a passion that developed later? And what was the first story you’ve ever written about?

I’ve always wanted to be a writer, ever since I could read. The first works I remember creating as a little girl were a poem about my dog and a story about a house that swallowed children who walked by. The main character in the story was named Shelly because I was looking around my room trying to think of a name and saw a seashell on my desk. It was far from genius. But I was seven, so there’s that. ;)

Q. What is your favorite part about being a writer? Is it creating the characters or world? Is it being able to get lost in your imagination? Or is it something else?

I love writing a first draft. Getting lost in the setting, daydreaming about the characters. That’s my favorite part of writing. I also love, love, love getting emails from readers. Sometimes it can turn a terrible day into a wonderful one.

Q. Both your Clarity series and your Sleuth or Dare series mix mystery with the paranormal/supernatural. And your upcoming title, The Dead and Buried also seems to incorporate both. What is it you most like writing about these types of stories? What do you find challenging about adding the paranormal/supernatural into your books?

I might not always write paranormal—Sleuth or Dare has none—but there will always be a mystery element to everything I write. However, whether it’s psychics (Clarity) or ghosts (The Dead and Buried), I find the paranormal intriguing and fun to write. What’s challenging is balancing out the supernatural with the rest of the plot. Especially when paranormal abilities are involved. I want them to be keys to solving the mysteries, but I don’t want them to be cheats. I still want limitations, hard work, and regular brainpower to come into play.

Q. You mention on your website that both you and Clare share a few quirks and both of you enjoy sarcasm. Would you mind sharing what those similarities are? And what traits of Clare’s are all her own?

Clare’s food likes and dislikes are basically mine. I don’t eat seafood, like Clare, and it’s strange to grow up in Massachusetts and admit that you’ve never tried lobster, clams, shrimp, etc. Also, I love horror movies like she does. And we both love our family LIKE WHOA. For differences, while we’re both sarcastic, Clare actually says the things that pop into her mind. I keep most of it inside. She’s also much braver than me.

Q. Your upcoming book, The Dead and Buried is due out in January. How would you best describe it in 10 words or less? And is there anything you can reveal about the book now?

A haunted house, a buried mystery, and a very angry ghost.

(That’s 11 words, but I didn’t want to cut the “very.” Because, yeah, she’s very angry.)

Disneyland or Disney World? Disney World! I’ve been to Walt Disney World seventeen times, but I’ve never been to Disneyland.

Lost: Jack or Sawyer? Jack. I almost always go for the “good” guy.

Pizza: By the slice or the whole pie? THE WHOLE THING. Nom nom nom. Pizza is my favorite food.

Write at night or write during the day? During the day. My brain is fried by nighttime.

Write in silence or write with music? Silence, though sometimes I can write with instrumental music on. I love Explosions in the Sky. They’re great writing music.

Write by hand or write by computer? Mostly by computer, though I write by hand sometimes when I get stuck. For some reason, it helps me get unstuck. ;)

Yellow cake with whipped frosting or chocolate cake with traditional icing? Neither. Yellow cake with traditional icing!!!

Happily ever after or happily never after? Happily ever after. :)

Review: SHADE by Jeri Smith-Ready

The SHADE series by Jeri Smith-Ready is one of my absolute favorites of ALL TIME, and I'd recommend it to anyone. And Jeri herself is one of my favorite authors, and one of the coolest, awesomest, most fantastical people I "know" (know being in quotes because I've only ever talked to her online ;D).


I've already reviewed the third book in her SHADE trilogy, SHINE, but I've decided I'll go back and review SHADE and SHIFT as well :D

Love ties them together. Death can't tear them apart.

Best. Birthday. Ever. At least, it was supposed to be. With Logan's band playing a critical gig and Aura's plans for an intimate after-party, Aura knows it will be the most memorable night of her boyfriend's life. She never thought it would be his last.
Logan's sudden death leaves Aura devastated. He's gone.

Well, sort of.

Like everyone born after the Shift, Aura can see and hear ghosts. Aura's always found her ability annoying--but not with Logan's violet-hued spirit still hanging around. Because Dead Logan is almost as real as ever. Almost.

It doesn't help that Aura's new friend Zachary is so understanding--and so very alive. His support means more to Aura than she cares to admit.

As Aura's relationships with the dead and the living grow ever complicated, so do her feelings for Logan and Zachary. Each holds a piece of Aura's heart...and clues to the secret of the Shift.

I may have mentioned this before in other reviews, but I absolutely LOVE books with worlds that are our world--yet not. 


See, on one hand, you have books like Mortal Instruments and Hex Hall, where there's magic and other supernatural aspects, but they're hidden from "normal" people, and the world, on the outside, looks the same. And then you have fantasy books like Under the Never Sky or Hunger Games where everything is different. Then there's books like this--like SHADE, or like White Cat by Holly Black, where there's something that makes our world different, but it's matter-of-fact to the book's world. In this world, everyone born after a certain point in time--the Shift--can see ghosts. 


Aura's one of those people, which is both a curse--because, hello, the last thing a teenage girl needs is to be pestered by ghosts who refuse to move on--and a blessing--especially when her boyfriend, Logan dies...and hangs around as a ghost.


Intellectually, Aura knows that Logan's dead--that he isn't coming back. But when he's there with her, it can get hard to remember that he can't still be her boyfriend... Death doesn't kill love, after all. 


But then there's Zachary, the new guy at school and Aura's science partner. He's smart, sweet, and Scottish. And, of course, he's alive. 


SHADE is full of mystery, romance, and heartbreak, as well as humor and hilarity, and is that brilliant type of story that keeps you reading and reading, and thinking back on the story long after you finish :)

Week of Archer Starts Tomorrow (and a few other updates!)

Hey everybody! As you probably know, tomorrow is July 13th! What you might NOT know, however, is that it's also one week before Archer Cross's first match in the YA Sisterhood's Second  Annual YA Crush Tourney!! Which means it's the start of WEEK OF ARCHER!!

There's still time to submit your Archer-related awesomeness!! Remember, this DOES NOT HAVE TO BE original artwork or anything, though that is totally acceptable and awesome!! More fun stuff! I know I've been very lame with posting for a while (particularly with reviews) but that will HOPEFULLY be changing soon. I'm in a weird sort of limbo-state as my family gets ready to move (plus I've been spending some time at my brothers' as-of-yet-internet-free apartment), which means review-writing time is slim, and quite honestly, gets stolen by distractions like Tumblr, Twitter, and YouTube. But I'm working on pushing past that, so within the next little bit you can expect reviews of SHADE by Jeri Smith-Ready (see my review of SHINE here), Pushing the Limits by Katie McGarry, If I Die by Rachel Vincent, Before I Wake by Rachel Vincent, The Assassin's Curse by Cassandra Rose Clarke, and a few others :) SO KEEP AN EYE OUT!!

Week of Archer!!

Hi guys!! First, because I forgot to mention it yesterday, Happy 4th of July to my fellow Americans and happy random day in July to my international friends ;)

Anyway, I have some fun news! I'm working on lots of plotting for Archer and the Crush Tourney. I'm thinking we're going to have a WEEK OF ARCHER leading up to his first match in the tourney (but hopefully not his last)!!

Basically, from July 13th-20th, Geek Chic (and other places, if you guys want to spread the word!!) is going to be FILLED with Archer Awesomeness! And I want you guys to help me with it! Seriously, I can't do this without you guys!!

I want you to send me ANYTHING to do with Archer Cross! Your favorite quotes and moments of his from the books, fanart of him, songs that remind you of him, actors/models who you think look like him, videos you've found or made celebrating his awesomeness, ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY, ANYTHING!! ARCHER CROSS AND WHY HE IS AWESOME

HEY YOU GUYS! I have some absolutely, completely AWESOME news!!


I'm sure you all know about the super awesome fun that is the YA Crush Tournament, hosted by  the awesome YA Sisterhood. (If you don't check out some info on it HERE and by poking around their blog.)


Well, this year, I was lucky enough to be selected to be an advocate for one of the crushes! And not just any crush--ARCHER. CROSS.

Who's Archer? Oh, just a super awesome, super hot, kick-butt warlock with a talent for sarcasm and being completely, utterly irritating. And very, very crush-worthy.

He hails from the awesome Hex Hall series by the fabulous Rachel Hawkins, and is easily one of my favorite crushes of ALL TIME.


UPDATED: My awesome brother CJ fixed the crush button so Archer's eyes are properly brown. If you've already grabbed the button, PLEASE replace it with this one!!

INTERVIEW WITH JUS ACCARDO:

-Thanks so much for taking the time to answer my questions! Jumping right in, what’s your favorite thing about writing the Denazen series?

The characters. Totally. I love spending time with Dez and Kale (and Alex and Ginger and Dax and….) :)

-What gave you the idea for the Denazen series? Are you secretly a Six, yourself? ;)

Hah! I wish. How cool would that be? And what an awesome way to keep the attention off, right? Hide in plain sight? Because there’s no way a Six would write a book about Sixes. Nope. No way at all.

And the idea really doesn’t have a cool story behind it, sadly. It just kind of came to me. Totally random!

-Kale is a very unique character, and his style of thinking is different than Dez’s. Was it hard to remember while writing that Kale’s inner dialogue had to sound like him, not Dez?

There were a few times I caught myself writing internal snarky stuffs. Things that would be going through Dez’s head and not Kale’s. It took a bit for me to slip comfortably into his head, but once I was there it was smooth sailing.

-Did getting inside Kale’s head for Untouched reveal anything about him you hadn’t known before?

It did, actually. But I’m not going to tell you what ;) Not yet, anyway.

-Have you always liked writing? When did you first think, I should write a book?

I’ve been writing since I was little. If I didn’t like the way a book ended, I re-wrote it :) I wrote my first book in high school and just kept going. I’ve got a collection of manuscripts under my bed that will never, ever see the light of day, lol.

-I saw that you have playlists for your books, which I think is AWESOME!  Is music a big part of your life/writing process?

It really is. Almost everything in my life is tied to music. Specific events, memories, certain periods in my life—they’ve all got their own soundtrack. It’s the same way with my writing. Each character has their own playlist and so does each book. I’ve even got songs for specific scenes. I’d be lost without music.

-Could you be convinced to share anything about Toxic? A teaser, or a hint of what is to come…?

A teaser sounds fun :)

Reflexes sharp, Kale stopped with about two inches to spare. “What is he doing here?” The venom in his voice matched the angry twist of his lips and barely contained rage in his eyes. Instead of flicking his fingers—the Kale equivalent of a nervous twitch—his fists were balled and ready to go.

Okay. Maybe he wouldn’t feel guilty.

Carefully, I placed the palm of my hand against his chest and pushed back. He resisted at first, cool blue eyes filled with hate and trained on Alex. After a few long moments, he took a single step back. “Explain before I touch him.”
