So, if you've been a follower for a while, you might have seen some of my Novels 'n' Notes posts. Novels ‘n’ Notes is a weekly event I created here at Geek Chic to talk about songs that remind me of books. Usually I post them on Fridays. You also may have noticed that they have been mysteriously absent the last couple weeks. I'm really sorry about that, but if you like them, don't worry--they ARE coming back. Right now I'm working on stockpiling songs, because, of course, not every song reminds me of a book in a concrete way.

Jet Lag (feat. Natasha Bedingfield) by Simple Plan: SHADE Series by Jeri Smith-Ready
So, I know I just did a SHADE-themed Novels 'n' Notes last week, but since that one was mainly about Logan and Aura, I decided to center this one on Zachary and Aura.
Like last week, this song is one of the ones that basically every line can be related to Zach and Aura, especially around SHIFT/SHINE time.
-" 'What time is it where you are?' 'I miss you more than anything.' 'I'm back at home you feel so far.' 'Waiting for the phone to ring.' "
Zachary and Aura are stuck in different countries, Aura in Baltimore and Zachary back home in Glasglow. And they miss each other. If that's not obvious.
-"You say good morning when it's midnight, going out of my head alone in this bed."
Same thing, Z + A separated and lonesome :(
-"I wake up to your sunset, and it's driving me mad, I miss you so bad."
And again. They're still apart. They still miss each other.

Like We Used To by A Rocket to the Moon: Logan Keeley and Aura Salvatore from the Shade series by Jeri Smith-Ready I absolutely love the Shade series. It's definitely one of my favorites. And even though I'm thoroughly Team Zachary, when I was listening to this song the other day, it suddenly hit me that this it's so totally an Aura-Logan song.
I'll list a few of the key lyrics like I usually do, but you've really got to listen to the whole thing, because the whole thing is perfect.
-"It should've been me inside that car...It should've been me instead of him in the dark."
Logan would give anything to be alive again, and to have another shot with Aura. But now Zachary's in the picture.
-"You're on my mind, love. (Oh, darling, I know that I'm not needed) And that happens all the time, love."
Aura is pretty much the only reason Logan's sticking around. But she's beginning to move on from him, because of Zach.
-"Will he love you like I loved you? Will he tell you every day? Will he make you feel like you're invincible with every word he'll say? Can you promise me if this was right, don't throw it all away. Can you do all these things? Will you do all these things like we used to?"

Is Anybody Out There by The Downtown Fiction: Ky Markham and Cassia Reyes from Crossed by Ally Condie
*Some Matched spoilers*
The Downtown Fiction is one of my all-time favorite bands, and as soon as I heard this song, I started thinking about Ky and Cassia and Matched and Crossed--but mostly Ky and Crossed.
-"He stands alone, conforming on his own. He's thinking but he does not speak."
Ky, at the Outer Provinces. Ky has always been a very introverted person, and even though he's quiet on the outside, compliant, inside he's full of thoughts and ideas.
-"But she is what he truly seeks, but she is what he truly seeks..."
Ky is looking for Cassia. He'd do anything to find her.
-"Hey, is anybody out there? I'm reaching out. Hey, is anybody out there? I'm coming down. Hey, is anybody out there? I'm freaking out, I'm freaking out..."
Ky is looking for Cassia. Cassia is looking for Ky. Cassia is looking for the Rising. And both of them are out in the open expanse of desert, where there's basically NOTHING.

Why Can't I by Liz Phair: Etienne St. Clair and Anna Oliphant from Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins
I love this song so, so much. And I love this book so, so much. So I was very happy when I found connections between them. See for yourself!
-"Holding hands with you when we're out at night. Got a girlfriend, you say it isn't right. And I've got someone waiting too."
St. Clair and Anna become friends pretty much instantaneously, but St. Clair has a girlfriend, and Anna has a maybe-almost-boyfriend back home, Toph.
-"Isn't this the best part of breakin' up? Finding someone else you can't get enough of, someone who wants to be with you, too."
*Slight spoiler* After Anna is "betrayed" by Toph, she's able to go back to Paris and hang out with Etienne. Which is, in my opinion, infinitely better than being with Toph. Just saying. *End Spoiler*
-"It's inevitable, it's a fact that we're gonna get down to it."
Basically, Anna and Etienne are a ticking time-bomb that's going to explode any moment, because they can't pretend they don't like each other forever.

Enchanted by Taylor Swift: Archer and Sophie from Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins What I love about this song in relation to Hex Hall is that different parts of it sound like both Archer and Sophie talking to each other.
*Some spoilers for Hex Hall and Demonglass. Mostly about Archer's…secret. Beware.*
-”There I was again tonight, forcing laughter, faking smiles, same old tired lonely place. Walls of insincerity, shifting eyes and vacancy vanished when I saw your face.”
Archer to Sophie. He’s pretty much been living a lie since he was a kid, (in his own words: “…Faking some emotions, hiding others…”) In addition to that, he knows Elodie and her friends are pretty much empty and vacant. But here comes Sophie, fresh and snarky and interesting.
-”The playful conversation starts. Counter all your quick remarks like passing notes in secrecy.”
Sophie to Archer. She’s quite possibly the only person in the world who can match his wit and sarcastic comebacks.
-”My thoughts will echo your name until I see you again. These are the words I held back as I was leaving too soon. I was enchanted to meet you.”
The beginning part could be either of them to the other, but the second bit is definitely Archer to Sophie. The conversation they have in the shed-thing in Demonglass? The words he held back before, um, that thing at the end of Hex Hall.
And, of course, each of them was enchanted to meet the other.

Numb by Linkin Park: Tris from Divergent by Veronica Roth
This song, to me, sounds like something Tris would say to her parents. I mean, listen to these lyrics:
-"I'm tired of being what you want me to be. Feeling so faithless, lost under the surface. Don't know what you're expecting of me. Put under the pressure of walking in your shoes..."
Even as early as the beginning of Divergent, Tris is feeling like she's always disappointing her parents and even Caleb, struggling to be as selfless and good as them. It's starting to hurt her, which is why she chooses Dauntless over Abnegation.
-"I'm becoming this; all I want to do is be more like me and be less like you."
Becoming this: Becoming Dauntless
More like me: Divergent
Less like you: Abnegation
-"And I know, I may end up failing too. But I know you were just like me with someone disappointed in you."
*Sorta spoilery*
Tris understands that her Divergence may get her killed. But by the end of the book, she also knows that her mother ***spoiler spoiler spoiler*** was Divergent, too.

Ok, so, today I'd like to try out a new segment here on Geek Chic called Novels 'n' Notes. Basically what I'd like to do is showcase a song that reminds me of a book, usually two characters' relationship in a book.
For the first NN, I've chosen one of my favorite songs by one of my favorite bands, because it makes me think of one of my favorite parings in one of my favorite books. :)
*Warning--teeny tiny spoilers ahead for Soul Screamers. I'm trying really hard to keep it clear. Then again, the pairing itself is kinda spoilery.*
Falling In by Lifehouse: Tod and Kaylee from the Soul Screamers series by Rachel Vincent There's a lot of things about this song that makes me think of Taylee around My Soul To Steal/If I Die time. When I listen to the lyrics, it sounds, to me, like Tod talking to Kaylee. I can find a connection from almost every line in the whole song, but I'll just highlight a couple:
-"This heart that I've followed has left me so hollow, that was then, this is now, yeah you have changed everything."
When Tod made the choices he made--the rather spoilery ones we find out about in Reaper and If I Die--he gave up being alive and human, and it took its toll on him, made it harder for him to feel things. But when he meets Kaylee, that all changes.
-"Won't be easy, have my doubts, too, but it's over, without you I'm just lost, incomplete."
They both know that being together would be hard (for various, rather obvious reasons), but it would be harder not to be.
-"All those nights I stayed awake, thinking of all the ways to make you mine."
I think this one goes without saying...:)
