Review: Wings of the Wicked by Courtney Allison Moulton

Wings of the Wicked! I wanted to read this book from the INSTANT I finished Angelfire. I loved that book, and I knew I'd love WotW just as much :)


[NOTE: Okay, so, as usual, as this is a second-book-in-a-series review, there's going to be slight Angelfire spoilers. But then, there's also a really big thing that is revealed at the end of that book that will be mentioned.. If you haven't read Angelfire I really don't suggest reading this review. I'm blocking out the huge spoilers, but THERE WILL BE SOME UNBLOCKED. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!]

Life as the Preliator is harder than Ellie ever imagined.

Ellie is balancing two lives. 


On one hand, she's a normal teenage girl, going to parties and hanging out with her friends, fighting with her parents and going to school.


On the other hand, she's spending her nights fighting demonic reapers with Will, her Guardian (and not-so-secret crush). Because Ellie's more than just a teenage girl. She's also the Preliator, and it's her job to protect the world from these evil creatures.


There's still a part of Ellie that just wants to be normal, that insists on going out and having fun and being human. But the other part understands that she's not normal, she's more than just a human girl-- [spoilery for Angelfire! highlight to see it] She's also Gabriel. Like, the angel Gabriel. 


As she tries to deal with the conflicting sides of her lives (and herself), she also has to deal with Will. They love each other and they both know it, but ever since Michael's revelation he's distanced himself from her, insisting that they can't be together. Ever. Still, Ellie can't help but think that they're stronger together--that their love for each other makes them better at protecting each other. 


And life gets even more complicated. Cadan's started popping around again, and he claims that Bastian's plans are still moving forward, and that things are not looking good for the fate of the world--or for Ellie's soul. There's always the question of whether or not Cadan is telling the truth, but it seems like he might be.  


As Ellie, Will and Nathaniel struggle to figure out Bastian's plan and put a stop to it, Ellie meets some other "good reapers"--some of whom she remembers. Yep, Ellie's memory of her past lives is returning. But even with all of them together, will it be enough to stop the plot? Or is this whole thing bigger than they even know?


Wings of the Wicked is just as (or maybe more!) action-packed as Angelfire, but still sprinkled with romance, humor, and (thankfully!) answers to some of the questions that we're all dying to find out about.

In My Mailbox (4/29/12)

In My Mailbox is a weekly event hosted by The Story Siren, and it's all about talking about what you got in your mailbox each week! 

I know there's been a lot of drama out there surrounding the Story Siren, and some people have decided not to participate in In My Mailbox because of it. But while I understand where these people are coming from, at this time I'm not going to stop participating in IMM.

I think we can all agree that plagiarism is always wrong and never okay. Beyond that, I don't want to voice any opinion on the subject, except to say that I hope people will stop drawing lines in the theoretical sand and allowing this to divide us.

I like the In My Mailbox meme, and I enjoy talking to you guys about the books we all get each week. For that reason and that reason alone I'm going to continue with the meme. I'm okay with you if you keep using it. I'm okay with you if you don't. I want to talk to you about books either way :)

Now, to get on with what's in my mailbox:

FROM THE LIBRARY
I got a good number of books from the library this week, but since I've already returned some and did a failtastic job of keeping record this week, I'll share the ones I can remember.

-Heavenly by Jennifer Laurens. This one is about a girl whose sister has autism, which was interesting to me as several of my friends' siblings and one of my cousins have autism. I don't know if you can see it in the picture, but the on the cover, you can see the face of a guardian angel in the clouds, something which I (in a failure akin to the Across the Universe and Black Heart fails) didn't notice until halfway through the book.

-Torn by Amanda Hocking. I enjoyed the first book in the series, so I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next!!

-Hallowed by Cynthia Hand. !!! I've been wanting to read this for a very long time (since the instant I finished Unearthly), but I'm also terrified about it because I'm afraid something's going to happen to my beloved Tucker D:

-Grave Mercy. Sounds cool! I wasn't intending to get it this week, but I saw it at the library and just picked it up ;)

And I can think of a couple more that I already returned, so no pictures of them.

-Perception by Kim Harrington. Another case of the !!!s. THIS BOOK. I already read it, and my review is HERE!

-Wings of the Wicked by Courtney Allison Moulton. EEEK this book this book this book. Yeah, I loved it, but it also killed me a little bit. Review is coming!!

-Deadly Little Voices by Laurie Faria Stolarz. I loooooved this book as well! I'm dying for the next book!!!

Review: Perception by Kim Harrington

I absolutely loved, loved, loved, LOVED Clarity, so the wait for Perception was AGONIZING! Finally, finally, though, my library got it, and I was the first person to get it! (Having put a hold on it the instant it appeared in the database ;D)


[Remember, because this review is for a sequel, there might be some slight Clarity spoilers in it! Read at your own risk!]

Perception by Kim Harrington 

When you can see things others can't, what do you do when someone's watching you?

Everybody knows about Clarity "Clare" Fern. She's the psychic girl in school, the one who can place her hands on something and see hidden visions from the past.

Only Clare would rather not be a celebrity. She prefers hanging back, observing. Her gift is not a game to her.

But then someone starts playing with her head . . . and heart. Messages and gifts from a secret admirer crop up everywhere Clare turns. Could they be from Gabriel, the gorgeous boy who gets Clare's pulse racing? Or from Justin, Clare's hopeful ex-boyfriend who'd do anything to win her back?

One thing is certain. Clare needs to solve this mystery, and soon. Because the messages are becoming sinister, and a girl in town has suddenly disappeared.

The beginning of Perception is like the beginning of Clarity: we start with a flash of the ending, but we don't stay there long before we're sucked back to now, dying to know what on earth is going on in that little preview. But that feeling doesn't last long, because it turns out "now" is just as interesting as "later."


After the events of Clarity, Clare is getting lots of attention...but that isn't necessarily a good thing. Everyone at school is suddenly interested in what she can do and what she has to say, and even the "popular" girls are suddenly her "friends." The thing is, Clare wants nothing more than to be in the background. Her gift isn't something she wants to broadcast, no matter how much the kids at school want her to use it for them.


There's more attention coming Clare's way; both from Justin and Gabriel. Clare's still confused about her feelings for Justin. Yeah, he hurt and betrayed her, but he also saved her life, risking his in the process. Then there's Gabriel, who is so different than Justin, who understands her like Justin just...can't. She has confusing feelings about him, too.


Finally, the last kind of attention--the kind that may be good or bad. Clare has a secret admirer, but when things go from sweet to creepy, Clare starts to wonder if the right word for him is admirer...or stalker.


To make Clare's life more complicated, a girl from her school is missing, but her mom refuses to let her help the police with the case after what happened last time. Perry's still reeling from the fallout of the last case, as well. Almost going to prison can do that to a guy. 


All mixed together, you have a choice between two great guys, "popular" jerks to deal with, a brother who is a shell of his former self, a newly overprotective mother, a creepy admirer, and to top it off, a possible murder case. Clare's life is not exactly easy, but of course, she's not going to shy away from the hard parts. 


(The next thing I'm going to talk about is super dee duper spoilery, so PLEASE do yourself a favor and don't highlight if you haven't read Perception!)


I loved the ending! I really loved the way there was no way of knowing which boy Clare picked until she said his name. I loved everything about the revelation, and of course I loved her choice (loved him from the beginning ;D). I really loved the last two paragraphs, as well! They were a very real, yet hopeful look on life, and they made me laugh. (See how I still haven't mentioned which boy she picked? I'm sneaky like that. Anyway, if you've read it, you know which one, and I refuse to spoil it for others, even in highlighted text ;D)


So what I really want to know is if there's going to be another book in the series. It seemed to me like everything was KIND OF wrapped up, but I would love nothing more than to see more of Clare and her family and friends in the future :)

Review: Croak by Gina Damico

I read this book a while ago, and I hadn't intended to review it, but in the end, I decided I wanted to share my thoughts with all of you ;)

Croak by Gina Damico 

Sixteen-year-old Lex Bartleby has sucker-punched her last classmate. Fed up with her punkish, wild behavior, her parents ship her off to upstate New York to live with her Uncle Mort for the summer, hoping that a few months of dirty farm work will whip her back into shape. But Uncle Mort’s true occupation is much dirtier than that of shoveling manure.

He’s a Grim Reaper. And he’s going to teach her the family business.

Lex quickly assimilates into the peculiar world of Croak, a town populated entirely by reapers who deliver souls from this life to the next. Along with her infuriating yet intriguing partner Driggs and a rockstar crew of fellow Grim apprentices, Lex is soon zapping her Targets like a natural born Killer.

Yet her innate ability morphs into an unchecked desire for justice—or is it vengeance?—whenever she’s forced to Kill a murder victim, craving to stop the attackers before they can strike again. So when people start to die—that is, people who aren’t supposed to be dying, people who have committed grievous crimes against the innocent—Lex’s curiosity is piqued. Her obsession grows as the bodies pile up, and a troubling question begins to swirl through her mind: if she succeeds in tracking down the murderer, will she stop the carnage—or will she ditch Croak and join in?

 Okay, from when I first heard about this book, I knew it would rock. Because, seriously, reapers? Love them. (This might have something to do with a certain sarcastic blonde reaper from a different series, whose name rhymes with "Cod," but that's irrelevant.) Really, though, the whole idea of reapers is awesome. The concept of an entire town devoted just to the profession is very cool to me.


Very quickly after I started reading I was sucked into the world of Croak, and I didn't want to put the book down. I instantly loved Lex, Mort, and of course, DRIGGS. Oh my gosh. That kid...yeah. Add him to my list of reaper crushes ;)


But all of the characters were great! Ferbus, Elysia, Dora...they rocked. Of course, there were a few exceptions--some REALLY annoying characters--but in a good way! 


Then there was the mystery. Someone--a Grim--is killing people who aren't meant to die. And not just people, but bad people. There's a scary kind of "justice" system going on behind the scenes, and it is very much not good. Yet...Lex can't help but be intrigued by the idea of bad guys getting what they deserve. Throughout the whole book, everyone is trying to figure out who the Grim is who's gone bad. No one wants to believe it could be one of their friends, someone they've known forever...but the truth is that's the most likely possibility--because the only other suspect is Lex.


One of my favorite parts of this was Lex's and Driggs' chemistry. Seriously, they were always bickering, and always hilarious. 

     "Scheming leads to crazy ideas. Crazy ideas lead to trouble. I get dragged into your trouble, we both get kicked out of Croak, and the next thing you know, we're freezing to death in the waters of the North Atlantic."
     "Dude, you are way too obsessed with Titanic."

     "Jerk!" she screamed at a hysterical pitch, punching him.
     "Ow!" he rubbed his back. "Kidneys again? Ever feel like changing things up? Maybe go for a non-vital organ?"
     "I see no need to mess with tradition,"

Of course, they weren't the only funny parts. Ferbus had his moments as well.

     "It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye," Ferbus said too loudly. "Then it's one-eyed fun."

(Here's another one, but I'm blanking it out because sometimes it's funnier to read things in the moment instead of before hand. But, read it if you want, I won't stop you ;D)

      "Seriously?" she said with a glance of skepticism. Driggs and this nerdlinger? "You guys are best friends?"
     Ferbus looked up briefly to give her a smug look. "We prefer the term heterosexual life mates."

Anyway, I really loved this book, and altogether it gets <*><*><*><*><*>

Waiting on Wednesday: The Evolution of Mara Dyer

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted over at Breaking the Spine, spotlighting books that have not yet been released but are being greatly anticipated. Today, my pick under the category "Eeek awesome-looking sequel and have you SEEN that cover" is the, well, AWESOME-LOOKING sequel to the Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin: the Evolution of Mara Dyer.

Also, Goodreads is doing this thing that if the Evolution of Mara Dyer cover is "pinned" on Pinterest 500 times before May 6th, they'll release an exclusive excerpt on May 7th! Cool, right? I'm not on Pinterest, but if you are, you should totally pin the cover :)

I won New Girl by Paige Harbison in a giveaway not long after I started blogging, and I'm so glad I'm finally reading it! I'm not very far in, so these teasers are from pretty early on ;)

(It's not that important, but this isn't the same as my cover. It's really similar, but the small text on mine sweeps directly under the word "girl" and says "Secrets run deep." But whatever.)

1.     I noticed in one picture that she was one of those girls who looked good in a hat. I always look stupid in them.

So yes, as the title of this post suggests, I have a tumblr. I've had one for a while, but I only got it so I could follow other people. Now, however, I've been using it to reblog some fun bookish stuff. While most of my blogging really does happen here, like my meme participation and reviews, I figure I can use it to share quick thoughts with you guys, and, like I said before bookish reblogs.

Review: Saving the World and Other Extreme Sports by James Patterson (MRRC)

So, who out there is participating in the Maximum Ride Reading Challenge?

I'm actually hosting it, along with the delightful Ella from Musings in Ink. Basically, the point of the Challenge is to read (or re-read) all seven of the already-released Max Ride books, in preparation for the release of the LAST ONE, Nevermore! Saving the World and Other Extreme Sports by James Patterson 

In MAXIMUM RIDE: SAVING THE WORLD AND OTHER EXTREME SPORTS, the time has arrived for Max and her winged "Flock" to face their ultimate enemy and discover their original purpose: to defeat the takeover of "Re-evolution", a sinister experiment to re-engineer a select population into a scientifically superior master race...and to terminate the rest. Max, Fang, Iggy, Nudge, Gasman, and Angel have always worked together to defeat the forces working against them--but can they save the world when they are torn apart, living in hiding and captivity, halfway across the globe from one another?

The bird kids are BACK, and their lives are full of just as much action and drama as before. Seriously, these guys cannot catch a break. 


The good news? They've escaped from Itex, they're safe and together, and there don't seem to be any Erasers...anywhere.


The bad news? They still have to figure out where they came from, they still have to "save the world," and whatever is going to replace the Erasers is sure to be about six billion times nastier. 


The odds are not in their favor. (Oh, sorry, wrong series ;D)


And, since this is the flock we're talking about, things. get. worse.


It turns out that the sociopathic crazies at Itex/The School are planning something big. Something unbelievable. Something incredibly evil and sick. They want to make the world a purer place...by killing everyone who isn't "perfect."


Yeah, you can see how that would be a problem.


The question is, how will the flock stop them? How CAN they, when they're technically nothing but a bunch of kids with wings, and they're starting to fight among themselves?


Okay, now that I've freaked you out satisfactorily, I'll finish up with some teasers!


One that showcases Fang's awesomeness:

     "Is dere anysing special about you?" asked ter Borcht. "Anysing vorth saving?"     Fang pretended to think, gazing up at the ceiling. "Besides my fashion sense? I play a mean harmonica."

Another that shows the flock's morbid creativity:

     “Look, we're trying to explore other options to your retirement," the whitecoat said. "You might be useful to us in other ways."
     "Because we're not that useful dead," Nudge said thoughtfully.
     "No," I agreed. "Well, maybe as doorstops."
     The whitecoat made an "eew" expression.
     "Or those things in a parking lot that show where the cars should stop," suggested Iggy. He closed his eyes and went stiff, to demonstrate what it would look like.
    "Also an option.”

And one more that basically sums up Max in a nutshell:

     His eyelids flickered, and it seemed to me that he was controlling himself with difficulty.
     Well, I get under people's skins. It's a gift I have, what can I say?

Review: Black Heart by Holly Black

Black Heart is a book I've been DYING to read ever since I finished Red Glove!! That wait nearly drove me insane! The world Holly Black created is AWESOME and I couldn't wait to get back to it. Also! I love that cover, even if I had another Across the Universe moment where it wasn't until I finished the book that I realized there were faces hidden in the "abstract" design :)

(Oh, and please note

that this review is for the third book in a series, so there might be some spoilers for the first two--but not the third, I promise!)

Black Heart by Holly Black
Cassel Sharpe knows he’s been used as an assassin, but he’s trying to put all that behind him. He’s trying to be good, even though he grew up in a family of con artists and cheating comes as easily as breathing to him. He’s trying to do the right thing, even though the girl he loves is inextricably connected with crime. And he’s trying to convince himself that working for the Feds is smart, even though he’s been raised to believe the government is the enemy. 

But with a mother on the lam, the girl he loves about to take her place in the Mob, and new secrets coming to light, the line between what’s right and what’s wrong becomes increasingly blurred. When the Feds ask Cassel to do the one thing he said he would never do again, he needs to sort out what’s a con and what’s truth. In a dangerous game and with his life on the line, Cassel may have to make his biggest gamble yet—this time on love.

One of the absolute coolest things about the world of Curse Workers is that it's the same as our world, yet so different. Usually, a supernatural/paranormal aspect in a book is hidden from the masses. For example, the Mortal Instruments world. The only people who know about Shadowhunters and Downworlders are Shadowhunters and Downworlders. Mundies are left in the dark.

But in this world, everyone knows about--and usually fears--the workers. They've known for a while, and everyone always wears gloves. It's almost a subtle difference, yet such a change!!

So, as the synopsis says, Cassel is working for the Feds now. That, paired with the fact that he's a conman at heart, not to mention that he's in love with the daughter of a mob boss, makes for a pretty big conflict of interest. Throughout the book Cassel is torn, being pulled all over the place, trying to figure out who's really on his side and who's just using him.

And besides all that, Cassel has to deal with his amnesiac sociopath brother, worry about his mother, help his friends with their problems, investigate a classmate's blackmailing, and go to SCHOOL. His life is not exactly great right now.

But through it all, there's still that question: Who is Cassel Sharpe, really?

A good guy?
A bad guy?
A conman?
An honest man?



A weapon?

Bookish things of AWESOME

Hey everyone! I'm skipping Waiting on Wednesday this week, but I would like to share several pieces of bookish awesomeness with you!!


FIRST OFF.


The City of Lost Souls book trailer has finally been released, and it is AMAZING. INCREDIBLE. UNBELIEVABLE. Check it out HERE!


I love the way that last line sounds. I know it isn't funny, but the way Sebastian says it makes me giggle every time. What do you think of the trailer?

Teaser Tuesday: SHIFT by Jeri Smith-Ready

In My Mailbox (4/16/12)

In My Mailbox is a weekly event hosted by The Story Siren, and it's all about talking about what you got in your mailbox each week! 

I'm a day later than usual on this, but I did get more books today so I'll just include them, too. Anyway, here we go!


FROM THE LIBRARY

-My Soul to Keep by Rachel Vincent. For the Soul Screamers Reading Challenge! Yays. I already reread it (I'd only just finished it when the proper Challenge month ended!), and you can see my review if you like!

-Embrace by Jessica Shirvington. I'd heard about this one, so I decided to give it a try! I've also already read this one, and I enjoyed it!

-SHADE by Jeri Smith-Ready. This is another reread, as I'm gearing up for SHINE's release!!!!


-Frostbite by Rachelle Mead. Vampire Academy was the first vamp book I read in a while to make me want to read the sequel, so...there it is :)

The books in this picture I just got literally twenty minutes ago lol, at my second library trip this week :)


-SHIFT by Jeri Smith-Ready. I really did mean to wait until a bit closer to SHINE's release to reread this one (I have SO MUCH to read rereads should be lower on my list, but...) but after rereading SHADE I just couldn't reist!


-Deadly Little Voices by Laurie Faria Stolarz. I've been DYING to read this one for FOREVER! It was checked out by various people for quite a while, but finally it's my turn to read it!!


-BZRK by Michael Grant. I'd heard about this one a while ago, but I just found it sitting on the "new" shelf at the library today! I'd gone in intending only to get SHIFT and Deadly Little Voices, but I just couldn't resist when I saw this!


-Black Heart by Holly Black. Another one I didn't mean to get, but couldn't NOT get once I saw it sitting there! I'm so excited to read this one!!!


ON MY KINDLE

-Untouched by Jus Accardo. Yay! I read this one and LOOOOVED it! There will be a review of it coming!


-The Book of Lost Souls by Michelle Muto. Looks awesome!!


-Eternal Eden by Nicole Williams. I've heard interesting things about this one! Looking forward to starting it!


-The Vincent Boys by Abbi Glines. I loved Existence by Abbi Glines, and lots of people seemed to like this one, too! I read it already and will admit it wasn't my favorite, but of course every book isn't for everyone!


IN MY ACTUAL MAILBOX

-Enthralled: Paranormal Diversions. I won this in an awesome #SHADEboys twitter chat, and I was so excited to get it!! And to make it even awesomer...

It's signed by Jeri Smith-Ready, and Logan even signed his story, Bridge :)


Plus, Jeri also included some super-cool swag!
