Teaser Tuesday: SHADE by Jeri Smith-Ready

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted over at Should Be Reading. Anyone can play, and the rules are simple:

I finished re-reading SHADE today (I decided I wanted to re-read both SHADE and SHIFT before SHINE comes out May 1st), but since I haven't started another book yet, teasers from SHADE it is!!
